Dr. Ferry Koster is a researcher at Leiden University and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies of the University of Amsterdam. Currently, he is a member of the research programs Social Security Reform (LU), Solidarity in the 21st Century (AIAS), Politics, Economics and Global Governance: The European Dimensions (PEGGED, EU-FP7) and Social Networks: Theory, Measurement and Outcomes (EQUALSOC).

Solidarity is the central theme of his research and he aims at understanding the conditions under which it increases or declines. He does this by investigating several dimensions of solidarity (formal/informal, attitudes/behavior, one-sided/two-sided) across different settings, like organizations, communities and nations. This research interest resulted in a number of research projects examining the effects of labor flexibility, globalization, and European integration.

Besides these theoretical and empirical investigations, he is interested in their practical implications and how to make the results publically accessible. Work in progress in this direction involves the development of a Solidarity Scan for policy makers and organizational consultancy using experimental research designs.
